Assessment
We use the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS) to assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as interviewing parents and other caregivers. From these sources of information, we will develop your child’s individualized program.
*Other assessments may be used dependent upon child’ s age or needs
One on One programming
Visions offers one on one programming to families based upon a recent approved assessment and consultation with family. Each program is individualized to the needs of the child and executed by a home therapist and program director. Family involvement and training are encouraged.
We offer sessions that addresses the needs of older children with autism and developmental disabilities. We continue to address academic skills for older children, but also work to make these skills functional—combining them with shopping, cooking activities, job skills, etc. We also address appropriate leisure skills, self care, and forming healthy habits. We work with the parents to help to carry over these skills into the home in order to increase the child’s independence and quality of life.
Occasionally a child’s behavior is disruptive to the family and parents need input into how to manage a specific issue or how to set up a structured home environment. Our BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) will conduct a functional behavior assessment and develop behavior plans to be used in any environment. We try to make the strategies put in place work with the family. We also offer additional training to other care givers in the child’s life to help ensure that the behavior management strategies are carried over into every environment.
We ensure that each child's program is effective by conducting team meetings, regularly reviewing your child's program using data and graphs, observing the current programs, and conducting parent and therapist training.
We offer social skills training to children of various ages and functioning levels. Social groups address specific skills but are also geared to encourage interactions and to allow students to practice socializing with their peers. We also offer social coaching one on one. These sessions allow us to address issues more intensively and more specifically. Coaching can address a variety of issues including (but not limited to) increasing self esteem, anger management, dealing with conflict, and developing strategies to socially engage with others. *See the summer opportunities tab above to learn more about specific groups.
Because the success of any intervention program is based on its usefulness in the natural environment, we greatly encourage our parents to be active members in their child’s programming. We strive to incorporate family's concerns and priorities in programming, making them an integral part of the therapeutic process. We will train parents who want to implement discrete trials, but it is not expected. Parents are expected to be a support to the behavior programming and their follow through is crucial.
Visions provides these same services to children with developmental differences. Our educational and behavior principles can certainly apply to any child with differences and challenges.
